2026 Porsche 911 GT3 review
There are some times in this line of work where you think „I’ve made it” – this is one of those times.
Having gone without driving many of the auto industry’s heroes for much of my career, I was finally offered the opportunity to drive the latest 992.2-series 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 – in both ‘Weissach’ and ‘Touring’ forms on separate occasions.
As you can imagine, I was excited to sample both, given the automotive lore that is the 911 GT3. It’s a nameplate that’s steeped in legend, and lauded for its absolute embodiment of the ‘race car for the road’ ethos, not just because of its screaming naturally aspirated big-bore flat six.
The latest GT3 has fully earned itself supercar status, not only due to its monstrous performance capabilities but also its voluptuous widebody haunches and trick rear wing (at least in standard spec), while the pared-back Touring specification remains the ultimate sleeper.
How much does the Porsche 911 cost?
Not that this really matters to potential buyers, but the 911 GT3 has crept up in price quite a bit in recent years…

Positioned below the manic 523kW Turbo S twins, the GT3 is the penultimate member of the core 911 range in Australia, if you don’t count the commemorative Spirit 70 limited edition, which is based on the Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (from $449,000).
Still, $450,000 is a lot of money considering you can get much of the Porsche 911 experience in the Carrera T variants which are nearly $140,000 cheaper. However, the T is turbocharged and less rev-happy than the spanking 4.0-litre non-turbo boxer six in the GT3, which revs to an eye-watering 9000rpm – more on that in a bit.
Like the GT3 nameplate, that price bracket can buy plenty of supercar status. A similar spend can get you into the 500kW Aston Martin Vantage S (from $420,000), or the Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro (from $418,900). Still, it’s considerably less than a Ferrari Amalfi (from $503,261) or Lamborghini Temerario (from $613,885).

What is the Porsche 911 like on the inside?
One of the great things about the Porsche brands is configurability, and the GT3 can be had with the racy Weissach Package for maximum manchild-racer vibes or, in the case of our Touring Package tester, optional 18-way adaptive sports seats in the lovely Cohiba Brown.
The 911’s interior has long been the poster child for supercar functionality and practicality, and this latest 992.2 generation has modernised it further with an entirely digitised instrument cluster. But it’s largely the same as the pre-update model in terms of execution – bar the conspicuous new Weissach Package option which basically turns this into a proper Carrera Cup car for the road.

Purists may lament the retirement of the 992 GT3’s analogue tachometer dial, including myself actually, but the new 12.6-inch configurable display is more aligned with Porsche’s new products, and better fits in with the central 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Speaking of, despite this vehicle’s almost single-minded focus on track driving, the Porsche Communications Management (PCM) infotainment interface is pretty slick, with very user-friendly menus and decent response times, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Thankfully, Porsche hasn’t relegated key functions like climate controls or the front lift system to the touchscreen, and the latter can also save points on the GPS where you want it to automatically activate, such as your home or office driveways so you don’t scrape that low front lip.
However, two of the GT3’s most important functions have been relocated into the PCM system with the 992 generation (not just the 992.2 update), much to my personal disdain.
The sports exhaust ‘loud’ button is now digitised, requiring either a flick of the rotary dial on the steering wheel into either the Sport or Track driving modes, or diving through the touchscreen menus.
Same goes for the deployable rear wing on the Touring, which has suffered a similar fate. Surely Porsche, you could have left these buttons on the centre console where they belong?
And, while the 911 has been the consummate everyday supercar for some time, as you’d expect for such a driver-focused vehicle it can feel a touch hemmed in especially with the Weissach Package.
Yes, the $47,540 Weissach Package is a serious bit of kit and, apart from the smattering of carbon-fibre bits fitted to the exterior, there’s plenty more it adds inside the cabin.
For starters, the rear roll cage that comes with the optional Clubsport Package is made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic and has a cool satin-gloss carbon finish, and a similar satin-gloss lightweight weave material is applied to the door handles and elsewhere throughout the cabin. Plus there are six-point seatbelts, a very liberal sprinkling of Race-Tex faux suede throughout the cabin, and Weissach-embroidered head restraints.
With the roll cage fitted (you also can get the Weissach Package sans roll cage), you also automatically add the $13,120 foldable lightweight sports bucket seats with carbon-fibre shells.
Porsche quotes a 12kg weight reduction compared to the 911 GT3 with Clubsport package, and you can save a further 9kg if you opt for the optional $33,480 forged magnesium wheels.
All that might sound like much of a muchness, but all of these carbonified components are bloody works of art, and also bring a very focused ambience to the 911 GT3’s cabin.
By comparison, the GT3 Touring we drove earlier boasted a two-tone Black and Cohiba Brown leather interior commissioned by Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur bespoke division – which just quietly adds $28,070 to the sticker price.
In conjunction with the 18-way adaptive sports seats up front, this specification makes the 911 GT3 feel positively high-end and luxurious by comparison, despite the fact the Touring Package has all the same manic mechanical bits as its track-focused twin underneath.
Personally, I love either theme. But, if it was my own hard-earned and I was planning to drive it regularly, my pragmatic self would go for the more luxe Grand Tourer option.
Perceived craftsmanship and build quality is very good, but while all of the materials and finishes are very high-end, the general design and execution is more clinical than extravagant – which some might not be expecting at this half-a-million-dollar price point.
At least the cabin can be filled with the priceless sound of the GT3’s 4.0-litre flat six in both Weissach and Touring specifications, which as we’ll get to later is nothing short of sonorous.
The rear seats can’t be had in conjunction with the Weissach pack’s roll cage, but even in the leather-lined Touring they’re best saved for small children or emergencies. The 911 has always been more of a 2+2-seater anyway.
Leg and knee room is next to non-existent if you try to squeeze behind a taller driver like 6’1″ me, and you’d be pressing your head against the sloping rear windscreen glass or roof liner if you do manage to get back there.

What’s under the bonnet?
There’s a 135-litre ‘frunk’ up front, given the 911 is and has always been rear-engined. The GT3’s 4.0-litre normally aspirated flat six has strong genetic ties to the marque’s motorsports ventures, though it has been „modified for road use” here.

The GT3 engine employs a number of components, technologies and measures to deliver maximum performance.
Plasma-coated cylinder walls reduce friction, and the forged pistons and titanium conrods reduce weight while optimising strength and stability in order to achieve the flat six’s dizzying engine speeds.
Solid cam finger followers are used instead of hydraulic lifters to help hit that 9000rpm redline, while the lightweight stainless steel exhaust features four catalytic converters and two particle filters to lower emissions while maintaining a „sonorous” engine sound.
Individual throttle valves control intake airflow to each cylinder precisely, and the dry-sump oil lubrication with separate tank and variable pump ensure accurate oil flow during high-speed cornering.
The 911 GT3 continues to offer a conventional six-speed manual transmission as well as the seven-speed ‘Porsche Doppelkupplung’ – or PDK – dual-clutch automatic, both featuring several optimisations and modifications compared to equivalent units fitted across the wider 911 range.
For example, the GT3’s PDK has seven gears instead of eight to reduce weight, while the optimised shift times are tailored to the GT model’s outright performance focus.
If you opt for the manual, it has an ultra-short travel and an ‘AUTO BLIP’ function for rev-matching when downshifting. Both shifters drive the rear wheel exclusively via an electronically regulated rear differential lock with fully variable torque distribution.

How does the Porsche 911 drive?
What. A. Car.
To experience the 911 GT3 is to truly understand its fabled lore in the automotive world, and the fantasy begins from the moment you turn the switch-like ignition – a nice nod to the past.
Even in ‘Normal’ mode, the 4.0-litre barks to life like an angry, unhinged race car. It shook the walls of my double-storey residence every time I turned it on in the garage, which my partner and housemate weren’t all too thrilled with in the early hours of the morning.
I sampled the 911 GT3 Touring months before the GT3 with Weissach Package, and while there are many differences in aesthetics and cabin execution, at its core the GT3 experience remains the same.
It’s fast, it’s firm, it’s loud. It’s like driving a Carrera Cup car to work.
For both of my GT3 stints, I drove out from the Melbourne CBD to my dynamic test route up and down Myers Creek Rd and Healesville-Kinglake Rd through the Toolangi Forest, and thankfully on both days we had good weather and clear runs up and down the mountain.
This hill climb (and subsequent descent) offers a mix of technical twisties and higher-speed straights, combined with many changes in tarmac surfacing and quality as well as, of course, brilliant scenery. It’s a great place to test the dynamics of performance vehicles not too far from the big smoke.
On the transit leg from Melbourne to Healesville, the general comfort and refinement of both variants is fine for the intended purpose, but the Touring sticks out as the more daily-friendly companion, thanks to its model-specific chassis tuning that’s optimised for touring comfort, as well as what felt like better sound deadening.
Also, the difference in seat specification between the two vehicles made a profound difference in longer-haul comfort, though it’s worth noting Porsche’s insane levels of configurability means you can have a non-Weissach GT3 with all the wings and carbon-fibre but with the more comfortable ‘adaptive sports’ seats and leather-lined cabin, like the Touring-spec car we sampled.

Signed speed limits of 80-100km/h are hardly going to challenge the Porsche’s outright pace, but once we headed up the mountain, the technical series of twists and turns, ascents and descents, as well as lumps and bumps in the road surface are about as close as I’m going to get to testing this thing on the Nurburgring within an hour of Melbourne.
The Touring feels a little more settled on winding B-roads thanks to its slightly softer chassis tuning, which has a more forgiving calibration to deal with the irregularities of country roads as opposed to smoother race tracks. It’s by no means ‘soft’, and it has all the same oily bits underneath as its circuit-munching twin.
Perhaps the most conspicuous shared DNA between the two cars is the drivetrain and exhaust, with the manic 4.0L flat six screaming as the revs climb towards that 9000rpm redline regardless of the throttle input – keep it in manual mode and you get all the soundtrack with minimal effort.
We sadly didn’t get to sample the six-speed manual variant in either guise, but the seven-speed PDK auto remains one of the quickest, slickest, and most engaging transmissions of its kind.
When pushing on, the PDK rapid fires through ratios as quickly in Drive as it does when you pull the paddles, and depending on drive modes will hold gears longer and downshift earlier, if that’s what you’re after.
It also doesn’t have that annoying lag or hesitation off the line that’s commonly associated with DCTs, and even with the GT3’s shorter gearing ratios and lack of an eighth cog like its non-GT 911 siblings, it’s hardly jolty or unrefined. The naturally aspirated motor also has beautifully linear power delivery, right through to its 9000rpm peak – it just keeps pulling.
Then there’s the wickedly quick and direct steering, which makes the 911 GT3 feel like your arms are fused to the steering rack. Every little minute input translates to immediate response, without the car feeling twitchy or overactive.
Even with its rev-happy flat six and rear-wheel drive layout, both the Weissach- and Touring-spec GT3s feel glued to the road no matter the speed or driver input, such is the level of mechanical grip on offer.
The rear-end doesn’t feel like it’s about to step out and try to kill you if you get on the throttle mid-corner, and the very firm ride still maintains its composure over bumpy and pockmarked B-roads in both specs – though the Touring is definitely better suited to this and drives with more grace and confidence here.
No doubt both versions will feel most at home on the track, but I was pretty impressed with how they handled the sort of ‘Sunday Hillclimb’ that most owners will be itching to do every sunny weekend. Regardless of the speed, they just grip up and go – though I didn’t sample them in the wet.
Perhaps more impressive is the daily driveability of this motorsport-derived track star, even with the racy Weissach Package. Yes, both cars lack the sound deadening and softer edge of other 911 models, but it’s not like you’d rattle your teeth out or lose your hearing if you decided to drive it into the office a couple of times a week.
Again, it’s the Touring which shines brighter in this setting, making the more demure GT3 the more appropriate daily driver – though I see plenty of ‘standard’ big-wing GT3’s zipping through Melbourne’s CBD at full noise.
If I had to complain – and it’s a mild complaint – it’s that longer-haul trips on coarse-chip roads and the peak-hour commute can grow a little tiresome, especially if you have a second vehicle as a reference point.
The shorter gearing means the GT3’s engine has quite noticeable drone at highway speeds in both standard and Touring specs, while the sticky track-focused rubber and reduced soundproofing mean there’s constant road noise and booming.
And, while the damping is pretty darn excellent given its circuit capability, the firm ride picks up every little road imperfection and undulation the GT3 rolls over. Best have a strong neck, because you’ll be bobbing about quite a bit on Melbourne’s or Sydney’s poor-quality roads.
Compared to regular sports cars that are a little more subdued, the GT3 becomes a bit raucous and unforgiving – but that comes with the territory.

Is the Porsche 911 safe?
As with many high-end sports cars, the Porsche 911 hasn’t been crash-tested by independent safety bodies like ANCAP or Euro NCAP.

CarExpert’s Take on the Porsche 911 GT3
To put it bluntly, this thing is a f***ing weapon.
It needs to be driven and experienced to be believed, and to appreciate the full impact of what is an engineering marvel.
That said, this is not a vehicle that can be properly assessed against our usual metrics – which is usually the case with this sort of ultra high-end, boutique vehicle.
The sort of person looking to buy one a GT3 doesn’t need my humble tick of approval, nor do they really care about pragmatic factors like value, everyday comfort, running costs, and the like.
But I can also say with confidence that – in both Touring and Weissach spec – the GT3 absolutely nails the brief of its target market.
It’s flippin’ fast, it’s fun (at all times), it’s loud, it’s endlessly configurable, and it certainly turns heads. Furthermore, it’s perhaps one of the purest performance-car driving experiences available on the new car market.
The GT3 may not have quite the same exotic street cred of a similarly priced Aston Martin Vantage or McLaren Artura, but if that thought is in your mind you’re probably in the wrong showroom.
Particularly in Touring specification, it remains one of the shining examples of road and track balance, while also retaining a level of understated excellence that the 911 is known for – even if you have to pay a lot of money for the privilege.
